These gave HTC’s flagship a unique look relative to other smartphones and the front-facing speakers were a selling point as well. For the forthcoming HTC One M9, HTC has retained the front-facing speakers, but there are some differences in how they appear along with other elements of the front of the smartphone.
Possibly the most noticeable change will be the apparent lack of speaker grilles on the device. HTC has chosen to enclose the sound system components underneath the glass panel that will cover the entire front of the device now instead of being framed by other elements. To get sound out past that glass, HTC is using two small speaker slits that run about halfway across the width of the device. Source describe the appearance and placement as similar to those on the Nexus 9 tablet.
In conjunction with this change in the front glass panel and speaker configuration, HTC is removing the black bar where they had their logo on the HTC One M8. The logo is moving down to the bottom of the device and will appear where the bottom speaker grille has traditionally been located.
Overall, the design of the front of the device with these changes is described as “slicker” and “more refined” by sources that have seen the latest versions that incorporated these changes.
