SamsungGearVRWhile Samsung may have missed the rumored Dec. 1 launch date, it looks like rumors that had the month of December pegged for the launch were right.
Samsung has the Gear VR headset listed on their web site for $199.99. AT&T also has the the new VR unit up on its web site for $199.00. Before you stop reading though to go get one, you should know that it currently appears to be sold out on AT&T’s web site. Also, you’ll need a Note 4 to go along with the VR headset. What it does is cradle the Note 4 for an immersive 360-degree view. If you have the new Note — or are planning on buying one — here’s what you’re in for spec wise:
  • Optical Lens: 96˚ Field of View
  • Sensor: Accelerator, Gyrometer, Geomagnetic, Proximity
  • Motion to Photon Latency: < 20ms
  • Focal Adjustment: Covers Nearsighted / Farsighted Eyes
  • Interpupillary Distance Coverage: 55 ~ 71 mm
  • Physical User Interface: Touch Pad, Back Button, Volume Key
  • Connection: microUSB connection to the Galaxy Note 4
  • Dimension (Headset): 198(W) x 116(L) x 90(H)mm
On top of those specs the VR headset comes with a 16GB microSD card that you pop in your Note 4. On that card is 360-degree movie trailers along with other videos that include:
  • Step inside Tony Starks’ Lab inside the Avengers’ Tower experience
  • IMAX samples of Hollywood films and documentaries
  • DreamWorks VR Characters
  • Pacific Rim Jaeger Pilot
  • Cirque Du Soleil’s Zarkana filmed in 360-degree fashion for Samsung Gear VR
  • Music videos from Vevo that can be viewed within the virtual movie theater
  • Protocol Zero game from DENA makes you kick*** infiltrator with Sam Fisher-like thermal and night vision goggles
Samsung has been working with Oculus Rift to craft some of these new experiences, among others using a mobile SDK. Given that developers will be offering their games and content for free for the first few months, the $200 price tag is really just that. That said, if you’re interested in the Gear VR, you’d better hurry, it’ll probably sell out quick.
